***** How It Began *****
Ned
He had been off on a business trip to the big city, he hadn't been there in
years, he promised his wife he wouldn't go back but he did. His child-hood best
friend Robert had recently been promoted to the head of a company but his
advisor Jon Arryn died swiftly afterwards and Robert was never a trusting man.
Jon had been almost a father figure to him and when he passed away Robert
turned to Ned, the brother he always wanted. They had served together in the
military when they had finished school and despite them going their separate
ways they remained close friends.
Robert had asked him to come to the city, Ned knew that he was going to be
offered a job as his advisor, his honour wouldn't let him turn it down. His
wife, Cat, was distraught. It meant that her husband would be moving away and
she believed the business Robert owned was corrupt and would destroy her
husband. Ned wouldn't let her lead him astray though.
Once his daughters had heard he would be moving to the city they immediately
wanted to join him. Sansa had never been one for the countryside and wanted a
life like the girls in her favourite films whilst Arya would do anything to get
away from an isolated town that restricted everything she did. They were only
thirteen and eleven but already they were showing signs of growing up. Cat did
not want both of her daughters to leave her but she allowed it eventually,
after all she did have her sons Robb who was sixteen, Bran who was eight and
Rickon who was only five.
There was another son, Jon, who was the product of an affair Ned had when he
just finished the military. His mother had died however giving birth to him and
Ned knew he had to raise the child on his own despite being engaged to Cat. Jon
did not wish to go to the city and Cat would have never allowed him to stay
with her. As much as Ned hated it, she despised him with every inch of her
being. Ned was slightly relived when Jon had come up to him one day with a
leaflet on joining the army. Ned knew it was the best thing for him and he was
eighteen so it was perfectly normal for boys to want to join the military. So
with a heavy heart, a few days before Ned and his two daughters left for the
city, Ned said goodbye to his bastard son, promising that they would talk about
his mother the next time they saw each other.
A few weeks into his new job, Ned discovered that it was actually Roberts
wife's family that was pulling the puppet strings. They were rich and powerful.
Ned had always hated the Lannister family, all they cared about was power and
their arrogance would be their downfall. It was no shock that Robert hated the
Lannister's either, just as much as he hated his wife. They had three children
together: Joffrey who was thirteen, Myrcella who was eleven and Tommen who was
eight. Joffrey had already wandered his eye to Neds daughter Sansa and whilst
he appeared handsome, Ned could see that he was cowardly, cruel and pathetic.
He would have to keep an eye on the two later.
That was when the outbreak happened.
No one knew where it came from but it did so very quickly. It was a disease and
that was all Ned knew. A disease which would kill and then bring the dead back
to life. They would not come back as they were before however. They became
flesh eating monsters, only caring about when they would get their next meal.
The only thing that could stop them was to destroy the brain. If you died you
became one of them, if you were bitten you became one of them. There was no
escape.
The moment they realised how bad the outbreak was Robert took a large group of
people and fled to a remote building in the countryside. It was large enough to
host Roberts family, His wife's family, Neds family, important business
associates and a large group of body guards and ex-military.
They believed they were safe there, but no one was safe anymore. will be added
as the story progresses!

Daenerys
Daenerys was an orphan since the moment after she was born. Her mother had died
giving birth to her and her father had been shot by the police force. It was
hard growing up when everyone knew that your father had been one of the biggest
crime bosses in Westeros. She had been on the run since then with her older
brother Viserys but it was difficult to stay hidden when your silver hair was
so eye-catching. Old allies of her father would shelter them but never for too
long as the Lannister's would always find them.
Although the epidemic was terrifying Daenerys counted herself lucky that she
had no friends or family other than her brother. She did not need to worry
about mourning those she cared about for they were already gone. Her brother on
the other hand missed the luxuries of their past life, because even though they
were on the run they had everything they ever needed, well everything except an
actual home.
Daenerys and Viserys didn’t live on Westeros anymore, before the outbreak had
occurred they had taken a flight to the island nearby called Essos. The disease
struck there as well but not at the velocity that it had in Westeros. They had
one body guard with them and he was called Jorah Mormont. He was kind to
Daenerys, he didn't look at her with pity like many others did. She would even
go as close to calling him her friend. Viserys only cared that he would protect
them, Jorah may have been around his forties but he was still strong and fast,
no one could hurt them.
When the disease struck they disappeared into the wilderness, Jorah had
travelled to Essos many times before and knew the country they were in. They
managed to survive comfortably to an extent, with only a few walkers trying to
attack them. Every step of the way Jorah was there to protect them, he was
truly brave, not like her brother who would freeze in place but then boast of
how he wasn’t scared of them. Since the outbreak, Daenerys could finally see
her brother for what he truly was, a coward.
They continued to travel until they made their way upon a camp, however this
was not a modern camp that Daenerys had seen before in pictures or films. They
looked ancient, made of pelts and wood, towering above Daenerys like she was in
a different world. She then saw all of the horses and she almost squealed in
joy. When she was younger one of her carers let her take horse riding lessons
and she loved them more than anything in the world, when he eventually pushed
her aside it was one of the saddest days of her life. She loved horses, they
symbolised the freedom she could never have, seeing them again on that day gave
her hope for the future. There were about ten horses in her eye sight ranging
from black to silver. She began to walk closer to them despite being warned by
Jorah, they seemed friendly and she hadn't seen a horse in the longest time. It
was only when a dark, rough hand fell on her shoulders that she jumped in the
air, finally out of her trance.
A tall man was towering over her, she had never seen such a powerful looking
man before. He had dark brown skin and even darker eyes. His hair was jet black
and long, running all the way down his back in a plait that was decorated with
blue beads. He was a large man, pure muscle, Daenerys couldn’t help looking at
his chest as he wasn’t wearing a shirt. He looked like he was from a fantasy
book, she felt like she was in a dream.
He began to speak to her in a gruff voice that she could only describe as waves
crashing on the rocks. He did not seem angry, more curious to who she was and
what she was doing here. She only wished she knew what he was saying. Jorah
walked up to her and began talking in what she assumed was the same language.
"Jorah, who is this man?" She questioned, keeping her eyes on the stranger in
front of her.
"His name is Drogo, He is the Khal or King of this particular tribe. A member
of the Dothraki, we have entered their camp without permission." Daenerys gaze
fell to her feet as she fell into a submissive state. She had heard of the
Dothraki before, they were the Natives of Essos but she had only heard of them
in stories as a girl. They were seen as cruel men who would rape and murder but
this Khal Drogo looked upon her with such kind eyes.
"Tell him that I am sorry for touching his horses but they are very beautiful".
Jorah translated for her and she felt a hand pull her face up to meet his. He
gazed at her for a while, thinking about his response before grunting and
moving away. She guessed that he wasn't too angry with her actions. Jorah
continued to talk though for a long period of time, Viserys walked up to his
sister and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Careful Dany, you know what the Dothraki will do to a young girl like you."
Daenerys then felt a twinge of fear, her brother always knew how to change her
mood completely. After a while Jorah stopped talking and the Khal grunted again
before disappearing into a tent. "What did he say?" Viserys asked.
"I told him of our situation and how dangerous the world has become since the
outbreak. He has allowed us to stay with him for as long as we so choose,
providing we earn our keep and do not break any of his rules." Jorah stated
calmly. Daenerys smiled, she was happy to be part of a group again. Plus, she
was intrigued about this Khal Drogo. Viserys however was not happy.
"Are you kidding me? I am the blood of a dragon and I will not live like a
savage let alone bow down to one!" He spat, Daenerys almost flinched, she hated
when he acted like this. Many times he had hit her when he was angry. Jorah
remained calm though.
"If you don’t you will die. The Dothraki know these lands more than anyone and
it’s a miracle we have come across them and they do not wish to harm us. As
your guardian I have sworn to protect you and this is the best place to keep
you safe.", it was almost like Jorah was trying to talk down a child having a
tantrum, but it worked. Viserys would not last on his own. He knew that better
than anyone. So with reluctance, he agreed to staying with the Dothraki.
Daenerys stepped forward and placed a small hand on Jorah's shoulder.
"Thank you Jorah. But what do we do now?" She asked him softly and he smiled.
"Now, we must adapt if we wish to survive."

Jon
"Alright you fuckers, we have a mission to do today. Whilst we still have lots
of supplies left from the camp its stupid to believe they will last us long
especially with winter coming. I want to send a group of you to the nearest
village and get back as much shit as you can find!" Alliser Thorne shouted at
the small group of men in front of him. He was once just a colonel, now he was
one of the main leaders of the group.
Jon Snow nodded his head and quickly went over to his den to gather his gun and
sword. Many believed it was odd how Jon had managed to obtain a sword. But when
you have spent the last month raiding dead men's belongings you often find the
weirdest things. It has actually been found by Jeor Mormont, Jons General,
however he was getting old and believed Jon could put it to better use.
Jon had been in the army for less than six months and despite that time he
never really made any friends. A lot of the people in his barracks were young
and stupid. They had joined the army because they could do nothing else, they
were from poor backgrounds and treated everyone like shit because they believed
the world was against them. Jon had no time for that, he was better than them.
They knew he felt that way however, they called him arrogant and vain, he
didn’t care though. He just needed to survive.
So he had been a loner since he arrived and the apocalypse hadn't changed that.
They used to be part of a much bigger army but were separated when the epidemic
started. Each barrack was taken to a specific camp that was designated for
keeping the population safe and keeping the walking dead out. Most of the army
went south but they went even further North, the cold climate didn’t stop the
dead but it slowed them down and made it easier for them to kill. They had
managed to survive but they had no clue about the other groups, the radio was
often dead and electricity was a thing of the past.
So it was just them, a group of around 150 men. There had been a few outbreaks
but they were handled quickly. Most people kept their weapons at their side the
whole time. They actually found that the majority of the problems came from the
living. At least two soldiers went mad and tried to murder civilians, they were
shot. That was the rule now, you earn your keep and follow orders. If you are
seen as a danger to the group you are kicked out. They also had trouble with
the Northerners, those who live past the Westerosi border. They were nomadic
people, uncivilised and barbaric, a wall had been placed to keep them away from
Westeros but they continued to try and pillage as much as they could. They were
thieves, rapists, murderers and monsters in children's stories. That didn't
change despite the apocalypse.
Jon often wondered what had happened to his family, he could only assume that
his father and half-sisters had died, they were in a city after all and those
were the hardest hit by the dead. He wasn't sure about his mother and half-
brothers. He hoped that they were alright, he often prayed, but prayer couldn’t
protect you against the living dead. Robb was strong, he had the best chances
of survival. But poor Bran who was stuck in a wheelchair was much less likely.
Jon walked over to the gates accompanied by Alliser and ten other men and they
set out. They had cars but they refused to waste petrol unless it was
absolutely necessary. The trip would take them maybe two days, but Jon was used
to it by now.
"Hold on a moment! I think you can take one more man! Or two?" A loud voice
erupted from behind them. Jon turned around and saw him, Tyrion Lannister, he
was the brother to Cersei who was married to Robert. He was a dwarf, only saved
from the epidemic by his families fortune and loyalty. Though money meant very
little now, provisions did not, and they had a lot of them.
"I don’t think it would be safe for you Mr Lannister." Allister interjected, he
hated the dwarf, he was too sarcastic for his tastes.
"I don’t see why, I am going to be accompanied by eleven of the finest soldiers
in Westeros and my own body guards. I need to get out of this camp and the
sooner, the better."
Everyone turned to Alliser who clenched his fists but nodded. He knew that
anyone who refused a Lannister was a fool.
Xxx
"So, you are Jon Snow? Ned Starks Bastard?" Jon closed his eyes and breathed in
deeply. He was beginning to understand why Alliser hated Tyrion.
"I'm not a bastard." He snapped.
"Really? The papers must be lying then! I remember when it was all over the
news! Honourable Ned Starks bring his wife his own babe from another woman as a
wedding gift! Everyone was shocked!" Tyrion could tell that Jon was getting
frustrated and he decided to stop joking and act seriously for once in his life
"I know you are angry, but believe me I know what it feels like for people to
judge you at first glance. My own family can't seem to get over their
prejudices." Jon scoffed and stopped, turning around to face the dwarf.
"Oh yes, it's so hard for you, Tyrion Lannister. It's so hard for you to be a
legitimate son of the wealthiest house in Westeros." Tyrion raised an eyebrow
and laughed.
"And now you know how they feel!" He exclaimed, gesturing to his fellow
soldiers.
"What do you mean?" Jon questioned, confused to what Tyrion was going on about.
"What I mean is that you are so blinded by your own prejudices that you cannot
see what is before you, you cannot see how hypocritical you are being. You
believe yourself better than all the men in you'r barracks and why? Because you
are a bastard of a rich family." Jons mouth was wide open in shock. Tyrion knew
he had hit a nerve.
"That’s not true!" Tyrion shook his head.
"Isn't it? You think they are stupid? It's because their parents could hardly
afford food let alone books to read to them at night. You think they are
immoral? It's because when life gets you down so low you do anything to
survive. You think that they hate you? It's because you remind them of the men
that turned their nose up at them for years. It may have been that way once Jon
Snow but not anymore. Your past life means nothing these days unless you still
provisions, security or land. You have neither and still you believe you are
better than them. I have seen you, I know you are a good soldier but surviving
is more difficult when you are alone. Let go of those attitudes and take your
new role in life with pride. Teach them how to fight, teach them strategy,
teach them basic skills. They will then care for you, admire you and respect
you. Maybe then you will get a friend."
Jon thought about his words for the rest of his trip.
Xxx
As they reached the town Jon heard a cry in the distance. The group ran over to
the sound of the noise and saw a fat boy, maybe Jons age, trying to run away
from the dead. It wouldn’t be long before they caught up to him.
"Leave him. Let's go." Alliser stated coldly and headed off in the other
direction. Jon thought about what Tyrion said however and ran forward to help
him without saying a word. All he could hear was Thorne shouting his name. The
sound attracted the walkers who turned around to face him and Jon quickly
withdrew his sword and sliced the first ones head clean off. The second he
speared through the jaw and the final one he beheaded. He could hear it still
groaning and smashed the head in with his foot.
He turned around to meet the young man he had just saved. His face was pink
from running and he almost looked greasy with how much he was sweating.
"Thank you Sir." He quivered, bowing his head almost in appreciation. Jon found
it awkward however and helped him get back on his feet.
"The name is Jon. What's yours?" He asked and the boy gave him a smile.
"Samwell Tarly."

***** Outbreak *****
Catelyn
"I need to try and find my husband" Catelyn said pacing around the room.
"I understand mum but we need you. I need you, Bran needs you. Rickon needs
you!" Robb tried to say, placing a hand on her shoulder. Catelyn sighed. Ever
since the outbreak her family had gathered supplies and built up their house in
the North. Thankfully they were a wealthy family and had many rooms for people
to stay in. Yet all she could think about was her husband and their two
beautiful daughters. She didn't doubt that Robert would keep Ned safe but Sansa
and Arya weren't born for a world cruel like this. No one was really. Robb
seemed to cope well however, but then he had to, everyone looked to him for
guidance.
"You have this place fortified, we have plenty of men guarding us as well. I
need to see if he is safe, if Sansa and Arya are safe." She tried to reason but
Robb was having none of it.
"You have no idea where they are mum! You could be searching all over the
country!" Robb was right, they could be anywhere or nowhere at all.
"Good thing Westeros is not as big as Essos then." Robb groaned and paced the
room.
"You can't be serious? Let our scouts look for them!" Catelyn sighed.
"I don't trust anyone these days. Loyalty is hard to find here, especially now
things like money are so hard to come by. I don't trust the Lannister's, I
don’t trust Roberts men. I don’t trust anyone who isn't my family. They are
what matter." Catelyn stated, physically shaking.
"Then I will look for him!" Robb cried. He knew his mother wouldn't make it,
not without him. But she was as stubborn as they come when it came to family.
This just made Catelyn frustrated however.
"They need you here!" She shouted.
"We need you!" All of a sudden they heard several screams coming from
downstairs. They quickly got up and rushed through the door, down the hallway
and descended the stairs.
Catelyn froze in place as she saw several walkers inside her own home. They
were right next to Brans room, what if they got him? Robb fired his gun at one
of the walkers and smacked the other so hard its skull cracked. Their guards
managed to take out the rest, shot fire heard everywhere. Catelyn fell to her
knees watching the chaos and cried her eyes out. Why would the Gods send this
plague to them? Had they sinned this much? Her children did not deserve this
madness. Suddenly she heard Rickon's cries and her heart stopped. She had to
get to him. She ran forward into the conflict and into her youngest child's
room.
There she saw a walker making its way to Rickon's bed where Rickon was sat
screaming at the corpse with its intestines falling out. Without even thinking
she ran to the monster and wrestled it to the ground. She knew his face, he was
a cook that she hired only a few weeks before the outbreak. Yet all she could
see was a monster who tried to kill her baby. So with no weapon she slammed her
fists into its skull. Over and over again, keeping away from the teeth until
she managed to smash through its skull into the brain. By the time she stopped
she realised everything was quiet. There was no gunfire, no shouting and no
screams from Rickon. She looked up and saw how everyone was gathered into the
room staring at her. Staring at her face full of anger and tears. Staring at
her blood stained hands and face. Robb looked like he was about to cry. He
walked over to his mother, offered her his hand which she took and they walked
out to get her cleaned up.
Xxx
"Mother I am fine." Bran stated, looking out the window. In truth it had been a
terrifying ordeal but he had Summer to protect him. All the Stark children had
been gifted with malamute puppies over a year ago. They had trained them to be
friendly to them but deadly to anyone who wanted to harm them.
"Yes but that was this one time! You cannot walk Bran!" Catelyn shouted and
Bran lowered his head. "What do we think caused this doctor?" Catelyn asked
their doctor named Luwin. He sat for a while thinking and finally spoke.
"Well this is a disease, basically a virus. If all the walkers accounted for
were men inside this building that had no contact with the outside then maybe
you don’t have to be bitten to become one." Everyone in the room looked at him
with dismay. Robb was the first to speak.
"So you are saying that any of us can be infected? At any time?" Luwin shook
his head slowly.
"I'm saying that maybe we are all infected. Cities were hit first, where loads
of people were crowded together and it spread to the country. We have all been
in this enclosed space for more than six months. It was bound to happen
eventually." Robb groaned as Catelyn began to start pacing.
"So no matter if we are hauled up or out in the open we are in danger?" Catelyn
questioned, pleading with Luwin to tell her what she wanted to hear. She wasn't
happy with his response.
"Yes...however if there is another outbreak then we may not make it
here...whether it’s the disease that kills us or walkers..."
Xxx
"Come on everyone! Lets move out!" Robb shouted as everyone gathered as many
supplied as they could and headed off with his dog Grey Wind. As a family the
Starks had decided that rather than risk another outbreak in their home they
would try to move around and find others to join with them. There were many
friends the Starks had in the North and she knew that the bigger the group, the
better chance of survival. They had taken some horses from the stables as well
as some cars that still had petrol in them. Bran was being driven most of the
way but when he needed to go outside he was carried by a friend of the family
named Hodor. He was one of the biggest men you had ever seen, strong too but
with a heart of gold. He loved Bran more than anything and would always keep
him safe.
Catelyn turned around once more to look at Winterfell. She wasn't born there
but it was home to her. It was where she married the man she loved and where
they had their many children. Saying goodbye was hard but she knew that she had
to if she wanted to find and protect her family. So with a heavy heart she
turned away and began walking. She never looked back.
